Putting down your bag of bricks

 

What if you just let it go? Whatever that thing is that has been weighing you down…. those things you have been carrying far too long.

I recently had a conversation with a dear friend whom I admire very much, a conversation that inspired this post. She talked to me about her years-long pursuit of getting stronger and stronger so that she could better carry and push through the heaviness that she had been feeling in life. She described that she feels like she is carrying around a big bag of bricks..... and that she just wanted to get strong enough to carry them easily. She's an amazing high achieving woman and so that strength shines through in everything she does, but this conversation got me thinking - wouldn't it just be better to put down the bag of bricks?

This isn’t to say that there is anything wrong with getting strong (it’s an admirable aim), but imagine if you had that strength AND the lightness from putting down the bag of bricks - you could be both powerful and joyful!

Almost every one of us is carrying around all sorts of heavy things that weigh us down and act as a drag on our energy….. one of those bricks might be a piece of negative self talk that has been hanging around for years, a fight with a friend you feel guilty about, or shame around a time we let ourselves or others down. All these moments and emotions we haven't let go of make up our very own personal bag of bricks.... many have a bag so heavy you can see it outwardly in their posture.

Modern culture tells us in so many blunt and subtle ways that we just need to get stronger and push through so we can carry our bag of bricks…. But it's pretty short on advising us how we can put the bricks down so we can lightly and joyfully skip through life.

When was the last time that you stopped and asked yourself…… is carrying these bricks around really serving me well? Are they expanding me or are they weighing me down?

Consider for a moment what might happen….. If you were to suddenly stop…. And just put the bricks down……

But how can I let these bricks go you ask?

First and foremost…. Forgive yourself for carrying around the bricks and remember that you are human, a fallible creature that makes mistakes because they are a part of life.
